The Heart of the Matter: Link between E-Cigarettes and Heart Failure

E-cigarettes are considered a less harmful alternative to classical tobacco cigarettes.  The impact of E-cigarettes on cardiovascular health remains elusive. E-cigarette aerosol can lead to the alteration of inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways, ultimately resulting in vascular endothelial dysfunction, thrombogenesis, and atherosclerosis [1].

A recent All of Us Research Program sponsored by the NIH carried out a prospective analysis of participants and their electronic health to determine the association between the use of electronic nicotine products and the incidence of heart failure. The use of electronic cigarettes can independently increase the risk of heart failure and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (see Graphic) [2].
