Diabetes is a chronic non-communicable disorder associated with unhealthy lifestyles. Obesity is one of the major risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) [1]. A balanced diet coupled with increased physical activity can prevent diabetes and improve outcomes for diabetic patients. Studies have documented the benefits of dietary interventions, in particular consumption of dairy products such as yogurt [2].
A recent review published in “Frontiers in Nutrition” has outlined the role of yogurt, as part of a healthy lifestyle, for the prevention and management of obesity and diabetes (see Graphic below). Several cross-sectional studies suggest that the consumption of yogurt has several health benefits including the prevention of osteoporosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as the promotion of gut health and immune system modulation [1].
